Motivation for Moving EsiObjects to Open Source
ESI has been the leader in evolving M Technology to Object Technology. We embraced Object Technology as being the natural migration path for M Technology. Through the EsiObjects project, we brought the best features of M forward and eliminated its weaknesses with the object paradigm. Today, EsiObjects has proven that M Technology and Object Technology are extremely compatible technologies. M Technology forms a robust, standard, portable base for Object Technology which has clearly become the way to build the information systems of tomorrow.
Our motivation for building EsiObjects has always been to give M Technology a migration path into the future. Over the years we have seen an understandable decline in M Technology. In a nutshell, it did not keep up with the times!
To demonstrate our commitment to EsiObjects, ESI has placed EsiObjects under Open Source licensing. There are several reasons behind our decision:
- M technology has been good to ESI and we have profited from it. We wanted to give something back.
- The users of M Technology seemed to have resigned themselves to the fact that they have no choice. Now they have at least a partial choice. Hopefully, the Open Source M initiative currently underway will bear fruit. An Open EsiObjects and an Open M system would bring back a potent state-of-the-art, competitive system.
